How to use natural features to determine direction?

Bring your own camping equipment, set up a tent, canopy, set up camping furniture, lying on camping chair, enjoy the beauty of nature in the wilderness, is a desirable holiday life, but what if you accidentally get lost?

1. Use the sun to determine your position.

Can use A post (straight bar), make it perpendicular to the ground, put a stone on the post shadow vertex A; After about 10 minutes, when the shaded vertex has moved to B, place another stone. If you connect A and B to form a self-line, the point of the self-line is the east-west direction. Perpendicular to AB is north-south, and toward the sun is south.

2. Use the pointer type watch to determine the direction of the sun.

The watch will be placed horizontally clockwise indicated (24 hours system) time after half of the position toward the sun, 12 o ‘clock on the dial indicated by the direction is roughly north. If the time is now 16 o ‘clock, the watch’s 8 o ‘clock scale points to the sun, and 12 o ‘clock points to the north.

3. If the weather is clear at night, you can use the North Star to determine the direction. Finding the North Star starts with finding what we call the Big Dipper. The constellation consists of ten stars that start out like a spoon. When find the big dipper, along the scoop of side A, B two stars of the wires, extend in the direction of ShaoKou about A, B two stars interval of five times is A relatively bright high star Polaris. The direction of the North Star is north. You can also look for the North Star in the constellation Cepheus, which is opposite the Big Dipper. The constellation Cepheus consists of five stars that are about the same brightness as the Big Dipper and are shaped like W. The North Star is found in front of the middle of the W notch, about twice the width of the notch.

4. Orientation determination with land and property characteristics is a subsidy method. When using, it should be flexible according to different situations. Freestanding trees usually have thick southern branches and smooth bark. The ring lines on the stump are usually thin on the south and dense on the north. The doors and Windows of rural houses and the main entrance of temples usually open to the south. Snow on buildings, mounds, ridges and upland usually melts faster in the south and slower in the north. Large rocks, mounds, trees to the south of the lush vegetation, while the north is prone to moss.

5 lost in the wild, do not panic, but to stop immediately, always calmly recall the road, think of ways to use all possible signs to reformulate the direction, and then look for the road. The surest way is to “go back to where you started.” After losing your way in the mountains, you should first climb and look far away to judge which direction you should go. You should usually go in the direction of low ground, so you can easily encounter it.The safest source of water is to follow a river, and this is especially important in forests. Because roads, settlements are often waterfront and river built.

If the directions of several roads are roughly the same and cannot be determined, you should take the middle road first, so that you can walk on both sides. Even if you take the wrong road, you will not deviate too far.
